Work Love Languages & Stay Interviews
Understanding What Your Team Actually Needs Doesn’t Require a Budget
The concept of “work love languages” helps leaders understand that people feel valued in different ways - through recognition, autonomy, development, quality time, or tangible support.
The idea is simple: appreciation is not one-size-fits-all. And it's pretty easy to implement - it’s low cost and requires almost no infrastructure. You do not need a new program; you just need better questions (and of course, a way to remember the answers).
The Power of the Stay Interview
I can’t think of a time or place where I would not recommend stay interviews. They are a great place to get to know your staff better and evaluate how you can best support them as a leader. A semi-annual stay interview can bring critical information to the surface:
How do you prefer to be recognized?
What type of feedback motivates you most?
What part of your work feels most meaningful?
Where do you feel underutilized?
What is limiting you from doing the best job possible?
And I almost always recommend rotating through themes, depending on strategic priorities:
Q1: Recognition & Motivation
Q2: Growth & Development
Q3: Workload & Sustainability
Q4: Collaboration & Communication
No financial investment required. Just be intentional and start meeting your staff needs by asking (and then really listening) twice a year.
Research from Gallup consistently shows employees who feel recognized and understood are significantly more engaged and less likely to leave.
This is just one of the many examples of small practices that compound over time that we at Catalyst like to help leaders operationalize.
